Steppin’ Up is the third CD released by the Obsessions Octet, an ensemble that was created over ten years ago and one that has become an integral component to Kent’s development as a composer, arranger and saxophonist. This recording captures the growth, and offers a few new different musical paths we are currently exploring.
“Steppin’ Up” presents a new musical canvas with more variety than the previous Obsessions Octet recordings with added elements of percussion, hip-hop and electronica. The repertoire includes six new original compositions along with two gems by Astor Piazzolla and a re-working of Chopin’s Prelude in E-minor.
- “Made in Canada, “Steppin’ Up” is a delightful fusion of American jazz with the world music of Argentinean origins. Presented with a classical European music flavor. Obsessions Octet is masterfully blending diverse musical cultures while remaining truthful to the essence of jazz art and the chamber music heritage. Bravo! “
